Why Deficits Can Pose as Disorders
Deficit vs. Disorder
It is easy to confuse a lack of skills with a disordered state (e.g., mental disorders), especially when we are talking about social, emotional or mental issues. For example, if we are highly anxious in social settings, some would equate this with a psychological issue such as social anxiety.
Deficits Over Time
Some of us were naturally shy as children and we never taught how to overcome such shyness. Because of shyness, we may have failed to make friends. Over time, such skill deficits can pose as mental disorders when in fact we simply lacked skills. Never fear...skills can be learned!
New Skills Matter
The great news is that it's never too late to learn mental fitness skills! No matter how long we've "practiced" negative skills, learning positive skills help! With repeated practice over time, we literally rewire our brains to enable new thoughts, feelings and behaviors. We can do it!
